The Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics (JERHRE) publishes empirical research and reviews of empirical literature on human research ethics. Empirical knowledge translates ethical principles into procedures appropriate to specific cultures, contexts, and research topics. JERHRE is the only journal in the field of human research ethics dedicated exclusively to empirical research. Its distinguished editorial and advisory board brings a range of expertise and international perspective to provide high-quality double-blind peer-reviewed original articles.
Our article titled “Strengthening Research Ethics Capacity in West Africa, 2015–2024” was published by the JERHRE on June 30, 2025. The paper reviews the development and evolution of Fogarty International Center–funded research ethics training programs in West Africa over the past decade. The paper describes the nature, successes, and challenges of these programs. It also outlines an agenda and strategies for future work to enhance research ethics and bioethics capacities in the region, both in terms of education and governance.
“We believe that the West Africa Bioethics (WAB) Training Program (now Center for Bioethics and Research) in Nigeria played a central role in this growth, serving as a model for subsequent programs in Ghana, Mali, and The Gambia. This paper describes the nature, successes, and challenges of these programs.”
Many congratulations to the Center for Bioethics and Research team and associates for the continuous streak of achievements. We are proud of this recognition that our work receives, and hope to continue to advance the research frontier.
