His current research, funded by the Swiss Program for Research on Global Issues in Development, is investigating the role of social media in connecting, empowering and educating students and alumni of selected nursing institutions in Nigeria.

Professor Ademola Johnson Ajuwon earned the Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Sociology from the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1984, Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Promotion and Education from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1990 and 2000 respectively.

He began his career as a scholar in 1991 in the Department of Health Promotion and Education, Faculty of Public Health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan where he has been teaching, conducting research, supervising and mentoring young faculty. His areas of research interests are adolescent reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention, social media and research ethics.  

Professor Ajuwon has participated in many international scholarly training programs. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, University of California, San Francisco in 1997; a post-doctoral research fellow for training on bioethics at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA in 2003 and a DAAD Staff Exchange Fellow at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban South Africa in 2012, and CARTA Senior Staff Exchange Fellow, College of Medicine, University of Malawi, 2017.

Professor Ajuwon has published over 70 scientific papers in peer review journals including the Bulletin of the World Health Organization; BMC Public Health; BMC Medical Ethics; Reproductive Health Matters; African Journal of Reproductive Health; Public Library of Science; and AIDS and Behavior.  Professor Ajuwon is a recipient of many research grants from agencies including the Fogarty International Center; Office of the Global AIDS Control; British Council; the United Nations funds for Women; the WHO; Wellcome Trust; and Population Media Center.

He has successfully supervised over 150 MPH dissertations and 5 PhD theses. His current research, funded by the Swiss Program for Research on Global Issues in Development, is investigating the role of social media in connecting, empowering and educating students and alumni of selected nursing institutions in Nigeria. He was Associate Editor for BMC Public Health and the African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences between 2010-2014 and currently an Associate Editor of the Malawi Medical Journal. Professor Ajuwon has served as Sub-Dean, Postgraduate, Faculty of Public Health from 2004-2008; Head of Department of Health Promotion & Education from 2010-2012; Dean, Faculty of Public Health from 2012-2014; and Deputy Provost College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, from 2014-2016. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
